A prophetic point about Syria

A prophetic point about Syria

The United States still has not taken the military card off the table with regard to Syria, although it appears that military action at least has been delayed by a high stakes international foreign policy maneuver. Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart have worked out a deal to dispose of Syria’s chemical weapons. The Syrian dictator Assad is claiming victory for Syria because of his Russian friends. War Hawk Republican Senators John McCain (R-Az) and Lindsey Graham (R-Sc) say it is the “start of a diplomatic blind alley.” So nobody is happy, except for the occupant of the Oval Office, who still can play out his military support for the Muslim Brotherhood and al Qaeda.

Kerry’s lack of foreign policy aptitude and negotiating acumen likely means that Russia walked all over the US in these negotiations. Details of the agreement are publicly scarce, except that Syria’s chemical weapons will be destroyed within the first half of next year. Of course, this is all dependent on Syrian cooperation in allowing UN inspectors access to the chemical weapons facilities. This is a similar type of agreement that has been in place regarding Iran’s nuclear weapons. Iran, Syria’s staunchest ally, has been playing cat and mouse with the UN, aided by Russia and China, since 2003 when it first agreed to allow UN inspections of its nuclear program. Prediction: don’t look for anything to change.

It would appear that Kerry agreed to not strike Syria militarily so long as Syria is complying with the agreement. But that does not take military aid to the Muslim Brotherhood and al Qaeda factions off the table. It just means that, at least for the time being, the president will not allow the US to become the Muslim Brotherhood’s air force in Syria. Notwithstanding, this president of the United States is deeply entrenched in providing tax-funded aid to sworn enemies of America. One analysis of this agreement would be that with the threat of chemical weapons use by Assad off the table, the Muslim Brotherhood forces can advance without fear. Although, we must remember that it was the Muslim Brotherhood forces that admittedly used chemical weapons.

No doubt, the turmoil in Syria has prophetic implications. Isaiah 17:1 says that “Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.” Zechariah 9:1 says, “Damascus shall be the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the Lord.” Islam believes that the Mahdi will battle the antichrist in the general region stretching from Damascus. In Christian eschatology, the Lord returns and does battle with the antichrist coming from the North and meeting in the Valley of Megiddo. The antichrist in Christian eschatology resembles the Mahdi; whereas Islam believes the antichrist resembles Jesus Christ. These are days where the birth pangs of prophecy are becoming stronger.

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!
