Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium alloy comprising of significant quantities of iron, niobium, and molybdenum and also less amounts of aluminum and titanium. It combines resistance to corrosion and high strength with excellent weldability, including resilience to postweld cracking. The combination has outstanding creep-rupture strength at temperatures around 700 oC (1300 oF). Used in gas turbines, rocket motors, spacecraft, nuclear reactors, pumps, and pedaling.
Inconel 718 alloy is a nickel-based superalloy which has good resistance to corrosion, high strength at normal temperature, and excellent creep and fatigue strengths at high temperature. Hence the alloy was used for many different applications for example gas turbines, jet motors, steam generation devices, and fission and fusion reactor structures (1-10). Recently, the alloy has been utilized for the beam window along with other parts of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) accelerator, and was chosen as a back-up substance for certain parts of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) under construction at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and other extensive accelerators (11-16). In those usages, the alloy has a complex design of austenitic matrix and precipitated c0 and c00 phases made by a normal heat treatment composing of solution annealing and aging (17).
It is known that high fluence irradiation of this blend design undergoes minimal radiation-induced hardening as well as softening with significant reduction in ductility (7,11-13). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations (14,15,16) show that superlattice spots diffracted from the c0 and c00 precipitates faded away from the diffraction forms of the aged Inconel 718 after radiotherapy to a fraction of 1 dpa. The dose-dependent softening was described by the radiation-induced dissolution of the hard precipitates (13-16).
