Is The Raw Vegan Diet A Good Idea For A Life Time?

I want to discuss my opinion on the raw vegan diet. I understand the concept that heating foods may destroy valuable enzymatic components and the body will need to take from the limited store of enzymes to assist in digesting the food. I also know that as a result of eating raw for any period of time, I feel great!

OK then, what's all the chatter about needing red meat and fish in our diets? A Few well known former raw foodists and some other health advocates are proposing that a raw vegan diet may not be appropriate to be eating indefinitely. The views differ a bit but some of them think that meat in our diet is vital for DHA, which is an essential fatty acid, presumably not available in a raw vegan diet. As far as I understand, DHA is what nourishes our brains and I believe it also plays a role in eye health.

From my study of this "issue" I found that EFA's are abundant in some seeds, nuts and plant foods, just not the all-important DHA. However, with further research on DHA I learned that there is a product available that contains DHA from an algae, and algae is certainly vegan.

Also promising is that, having sufficient EFA's in the diet from vegetable foods (walnuts and flax seeds for example.), our body can actually manufacture usable DHA from the fats. Granted, it could be more "work" than you want to put your body through, and it may require some extra nutritional compounds that could be helpful in other parts of the body. But, with the plethora of extra digestible nutrients from raw foods, that might not be a concern. However, as stated before, a plant source of DHA is now readily available.

I don't intend to discuss the misnomer that protein isn't available from plant foods because I believe by now that notion has been debunked, but another highly discussed issue regarding the raw foods diet is the availability of the essential vitamin B12, that is said to only be available from animal products. Plenty of raw foodies will suggest the same thing and then go on to advertise a plant-based B12 supplement that "they utilize themselves". But, a quick read of the Chlorella Factor found here: chlorellafactor.com will certainly change your mind about that. Again, algaes to the rescue.

In closing I would like to give you my opinion on the raw food diet for longer lifespan. To keep it real I don't really know. However, I feel that there is no doubt that a fully organic raw food diet is an ideal method to detox and also heal from illness and maybe even disease.

Since I am not certain about going on a raw diet for a lifetime, I adhere to a high raw, mostly vegan diet unless I am on a cleanse. I consume a lot of juices and green smoothies but I also include some cooked eggs, bee by-products like honey and bee pollen and occasionally some small fish.

Why do we need to take omega-3 supplements? One of the most common supplements is omega fish oil and research seems to support its use. There appears to be little argument that our bodies cannot manufacture omega-3 fatty acids
